Summer Work Style

Monday was Memorial Day in the states, and a bank holiday here but most importantly, it marked for most people the beginning of summer! Now that the weather is getting warmer, other problems arise like what to wear to work. Most people think of the warmer months as license to bare more skin but at work, what is really appropriate? Here are some outfits that I think qualify as stylish summer options that are still work-appropriate and won’t have you suffering heat stroke on your commute.

The ultimate show of confidence: a crisp white suit, accented by shades of blue and the season's it color for shoes - nude!

Role Model Phillip Lim

Cruising Bryanboy this morning as usual, I came across this December interview with Phillip Lim and was so inspired. In a world of Olsens and Gagas claiming their extreme styles are 100% natural without any thought to marketing, press, etc. I finally felt like I was seeing something real. I am in awe of this designer I’ve read a little about but realize I don’t know very much about. This is the kind of designer that I would want to be.

Airing the Dirty (Designer) Laundry

Tom Ford spoke to CNN yesterday about Gucci, his own label and Yves Saint Laurent. Specifically Ford promised that in the next 35 years, if anyone still cares, he will consider publishing a book featuring the hate mail he received from Yves Saint Laurent himself. This announcement comes only weeks after the premiere of L’amour Fou at the Tribeca Film Festival, a film remembering the legacy of YSL and his business and life partner Pierre Bergé.

I can’t wait to see this film and am dying to find out when it will premiere in London.

Real Food Festival

I had so much fun with my friend Rachel Sunday at the Real Food Festival at Earl’s Court. There were gazillions of vendors and it took us hours to get through but so worth it!

The Real Food Festival at Earl's Court.

There were sheep, chicken and buffalo in attendance and hundreds of samples to try. We actually got filled up on those alone! We even had some free booze.

Some of the animals on show at the festival.

What a great way to spend a lazy afternoon. Maybe it had something to do with being VIPs? Lol. They even gave us a free bag, cookbook and cocktail!

Life as a Real Food Festival VIP :)

I bought 2 Easy Bean pots and 2 flavored balsamics, delicious!

But what I really wanted was these chocolate shoes! It’s like they were made for me, combining my 2 favorite things!

Chocolate shoes! Oh my!

Lunch yesterday at Soho Secret Tea Room…

So cute! Complete with a little sand timer to let you know when your tea is ready!

Prettiest lunch I ever ate!

I’m Back :)

Guo Pei's avant garde look from F/W 2011. Not really my idea of work wear, unless I worked for Lady Gaga or Alice in Wonderland - which might both actually be very fun!.

I’ve been contemplating my return to the blogosphere for some time now. I’ve been back in London since February and lots of high fashion events have taken place since then (Oscars, Royal Wedding, Met Gala, etc.) but none seemed like the right time to stage my return. I didn’t necessarily want to come back in the midst of big event coverage anyway.

But I have been thinking alot about fashion and the way fashion is covered by mainstream media and particularly blogs. I haven’t reached any big conclusions but there is something I want to explore, not only in this post but through this blog as a whole. The biggest fashion blogs – the ones whose bloggers are jet-setting all over the world on the dime of the biggest fashion houses or Vogue – definitely serve their purpose and who would I be to bash them here in my humble little corner of the Internet? But I don’t feel that they are in touch with what I feel fashion is really about. I understand that avant garde style is fun to look at and ultimately is the starting point for many high street fashions that come into the mainstream after being filtered and diluted from some of the most outrageous runway looks. What I don’t understand is how much time, money and coverage is invested in this kind of fashion. Surely, ready-to-wear – and by that I mean clothes that women specifically would actually wear out of the house – should get the most coverage and most money invested in to it. After all, it is what we can and would actually buy and wear in our day-to-day lives. You only need to turn on the TV at any given time to see one of countless makeover shows taking women with seemingly no dress sense and making them over in to polished sophisticated women. Has anyone stopped to think that maybe if we want our neighbors to be more aesthetically pleasing we should focus on real fashion and not try to confuse them with anorexics walking down runways wearing only toilet paper with colanders on their heads and makeup that looks as though it was applied by Ke$ha?

Therefore, I am re-dedicating this blog to real fashion for real women. Will this result in my getting invited to sit next to Anna Wintour at the next fashion week? No. But I do believe that it may make fashion more pallatable for the people who need it or simply for those who appreciate real-world style. I am not hating on high-fashion bloggers or high/avant garde-fashion at all and I may in fact cover some fashion news about it but I do want this blog to be a testament to the fact that fashion is attainable for every woman, at every budget, you just have to know where to look – and you’ve found it!

P.s. My one profound conclusion about the meaning of true fashion? It’s not just about clothes, it’s a lifestyle. Look forward to more about food, events, books, movies, etc. I’m excited just thinking about what’s in store for you!

Going on Hiatus…

…be back soon!

Jumpsuits…

Rachel Zoe in a fabulous jumpsuit. Two words: Ba-Nannas!

I was not a fan of the jumpsuit fan that premiered last season. I just don’t think that they’re that flattering for anyone. But maybe I just didn’t know how to wear them because when I saw this pic of Rachel in a green deep-V sleeveless jumpsuit – you guessed it – I die!

Some of my favorite jumpsuits I found cruising the net.

Get one for yourself: Fuse by Preen Zip Detail Jumpsuit in Grey (Very.co.uk, £32), Ve-Janie V-neck Halter Jumpsuit (Yesstyle, $22), Two-In Sleeveless Jumpsuit with Sash (Yesstyle, $102), Cargo Cuffed Jumper (Baby Phat, $74), Deep V-neck Belted Jumper (Baby Phat, $59), Double V-neck Jumpsuit (Baby Phat, $69), FoxCity Lace-Yoke Jumpsuit (Yesstyle, $62).

I’m loving the skinny-leg look as well as the cropped look but my fav is the “VeJanie” jumpsuit (second on the left).

Let the Mud Wrestling Begin!

So we’ve all seen Victoria’s Secret commercials that make us want to stop munching whatever it is we’re shoveling into our mouths in front of the TV and run puking into the bathroom. I posted just one example for fun. But recently, Lane Bryant’s own lingerie commercial sparked controversy when ABC and FOX censored it but aired Vicky’s girls per usual. Lane Bryant accused the networks of bias and the issue sparked a comment war online (see the LB commericial below).

Soooo, this morning I was greeted by a video response to this battle that was posted but not created by Lane Bryant. I don’t even want to say anything about it because it’s so perfect but take a look and let me know what you think. All of the VS cliches are perfectly performed!

Now I love Vicky’s but consider one commercial over the other. Marissa Miller in a bra and panty set on all fours on a pool table? Alessandra Ambrosio tied up? Or a big girl in full coverage lingerie occasionally covered by a huge coat? C’mon!

I <3 J Hud

Jennifer Hudson on the cover of the latest People magazine claiming to be a size 6.

I love J Hud as much as the next person. Can’t say I loved Dreamgirls but loved her in Sex and the City as Carrie’s assistant and loved her big number in Dreamgirls. That said, I saw the new cover of People magazine this morning and I’m a little skeptical to say the least. Now, there’s no doubt that Jennifer has lost lots of weight and looks fab – although she carried her weight well when she was bigger – but a size 6? I’m a size 6, sometimes a four depending on the store but Jen, you’re a 10, an 8 at best. Embrace it. You’re a size 6 like Jennifer Love Hewitt is a size 2. Maybe it’s in the name?

A photo of Jennifer Love Hewitt on the beach that prompted her to attack the media about how they affect body image issues, claiming she was a size 2.
